CARING: CONCEP AND REFERENCES

During this school year, Art and School will focus upon CARING. Almost certainly, the first thing that comes to mind when we approach this concept is caring for people in a moment of need, of illness, of mourning, of vulnerability, of beauty, of childhood. At these times, caring is essential. You might consider the difference between medical care and nursing care. Understanding that carers also need to be cared for.

But the concept also includes taking care of friends, and of family; The concept may be considered through emotions and values, caring about the words we use, caring about empathy and respect for others, or for ourselves; looking after ourselves. What am I showing of myself, and what am I hiding? Am I showing self-respect?

You might consider caring from a social perspective, in the relationship that the individual establishes with the group. In order to live in society, respect must prevail, and without caring, there is no respect.

Or you might consider it from the perspective of the natural sciences, taking care of the environment, shared spaces, the home, the school, the world around us. Taking care of the countryside, of biology, of life.

There is also caring in aesthetics, for example. when choosing a particular colour or font, when attempting to lay down a detailed brushstroke, or pencilstroke, or when we clean out and strip away superfluous details from a space, or from a discourse.

Caring may mean taking time over work, progressing slowly and thoughtfully; not wishing to do several things at once, but rather to concentrate fully on one task in the here and now, without distractions.

And this entire journey might lead us to some controversial thoughts, such as: Is love essential to caring? Why do we care for other people? Out of empathy? Or do we get something out of it? Are we looking for a benefit in return, or is it altruism?

This theme allows us to address asymmetric power relations and the imperatives of the world of caring, as well as the lack of remuneration or recognition within the patriarchal system for much care work.

Art’s intersections with care, affection, and the emotional sphere are not new, but we cannot forget the fact that in our present day, considering the deterioration of relationships caused by the culture of self-centredness, by the superficial nature of social networks, by the acceleration of the climate crisis, and finally, but not least, by the pandemic, the current moment almost demands that this strand of critical reflection, and an anthology of various contemporary artistic contributions along these lines, must be attempted.

About CARING
Leading artists

We have tried to bring together a number of artists who address various aspects of caring, as described above. This selection is a brief tour of artists who explore the healing capabilities of art, who care for other people, for society, for life, and for the earth, using art as a process of personal exploration and healing, as well as other artists who document a process, sometimes personal, of illness, addiction, or vulnerability.

Training programme 2021 of the ACCA, Catalan Association of Art Critics, curated by Diana Padrón and Roc Domingo, which, in addition to a series of public seminars scheduled for the autumn, presents a series of twelve fortnightly newsletters with the aim of deploying a cartography of the plurality of cultural practices oriented to care policies, as well as broadcasting and opening up this debate in multiple directions.
