WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

Professionals in the field of education, teachers, pupils and anyone interested in the fields of art and education, who may wish to explore the possibilities art can offer as an educational tool.

INTRODUCTION

The course looks at the big picture of the current artistic scene, giving educators the means to teach them to understand and practise art. It will provide an overview to awaken participants' curiosity, so they can explore many of the issues discussed in greater depth.

COURSE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

The course will be led by professionals in each of the fields touched upon in each session, who will discuss how artistic tools and resources may be applied in the classroom.

Session 1: ways of imagining and creating with arts

Practical session with the application of art teaching resources for all ages. We will look for resources which help to reveal pupils' creative potential by teaching them to rely on their personal skills and their own judgment; we will also suggest exercises which may be easily applied within educational practice. An experience to express, evaluate, look, listen, create and transform.

NB Each participant must bring 3 objects and 3 printed images of artworks, chosen by themselves personally.

A session with Assumpta Cirera_Tuti, lecturer at UVic and art teaching resources researcher

Session 2: Resources for a pedagogy of contemporary visual arts

This session will be a practial display of resources for teaching the arts from the graphic-arts techniques. We will present techniques and materials which, in spite of being considered as part of art resources, offer the possibility of manipulation by means of simple processes generating a rapid response of the students. The aim is to extend the framework of reference materials for art to a broader range of everyday experience, in which all reference materials can take on new and surprising meanings.

Practical session at l’Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de Vic.

A session with Marià Dinarès and Toni Garcia, teachers at l’EASD de Vic.

Session 3: Shapes and volumes

The session, theoretical and practical, will show different ways of working with volume, and how to apply these at school, both on an individual level and in collective projects. The emphasis will shift from material to form, from idea to material, and from place into material and form.

NB Participants must bring a box for a practical proposal. Practice starts on choosing the box.

A session with: Alicia Casadesús, artist and visual arts teacher.

Session 4: Functionality of contemporary art practices

Session which introduces us to the functionality of contemporary art practices and possible relationships with education. Through several examples, we will analyse functional aspects which some current artistic practices have pursued, as well as those relationships which lead to educational activities. Elements such as mainstreaming across disciplines, promoting a critical look at context, art as a political tool, art as a tool for propaganda and communication, art and education as tools for transformation and impact upon social space.

A session with: Ramon Parramon, director of ACVic. Centre d’Arts Contemporànies de Vic.

Session 5: Education in, and using, audiovisual material

This session will discuss the need for an education in audiovisual culture, in a world where visual communication is much glutted with visual communication. We will discuss different levels of broadcasting, film, advertising, social networking, etc., to see how an understanding of these constant stimuli we receive may be taught. How to learn to look? How to create and how to read an image? We will see how we can use the media as a learning tool in the classroom, and how to motivate pupils by using this language. We will understand contemporary art as a part of visual culture, and we will consider the urgent need for art education to take its rightful place in the study of today's hyper-reality.

A session with: Bruna Dinarès, Bachelor's Degree in Audiovisual communication and member of ACVic. Centre d’Arts Contemporànies de Vic's education team.

Session 6: Materials to create and present schoolwork

The session offers a brief consideration of educational materials as a resource available to teachers when implementing educational proposals. Also we will review different types of projects with educational materials to find out what are the possibilities for use in the classroom, and how to use them to find new approaches to educational activity. Finally, we will see some samples of readily available materials which can help improve the resources performance and resource, and we will talk about their use, where to find them, and how to apply them in practice.

A session with: Toni Cirera, creator of Materials Educatius, a business which helps in the development of educational projects for schools and organisations.
