AE06 Vedruna 01 brSHELTER
Art i Escola 08

For the 2018-19 school year, ART I ESCOLA (Art and School) proposes the theme of SHELTER. Participating schools may take many different approaches to this theme.

How to approach the theme?

A shelter is a protection against danger, against the elements. It can be a place to hide, to protect yourself from fears, from others, or even from yourself.

A hut is a shelter.
A mountain refuge.
An anti-aircraft shelter.
A refuge for fishermen.
A nest, a den.
An umbrella.
A costume, a mask.
The house.

There are symbolic shelters: friendship, family, love.
The school. An association, a group.
The posse, the group with which you identify, and which protects you.
Also an urban tribe acts as a shelter, in which you come together as equals.
Or fashion or the "comfort zone".
And even drugs can be a refuge for some.

Educational approaches to the theme:

Values:
If we talk about shelter, we can talk about emotions. A hug.
We can talk about primary needs.
Our behaviour, with respect to the group, can lead us away from the rules, out of the comfort zone.
Introspection

Technology:
Architecture, construction, housing.

Natural Science:
Shell, nest, camouflage. How do living beings behave in relation to protection?
Natural parks or protected zones are refuges for fauna and flora.

Social Sciences:
The right to housing is an economic, social and cultural right to adequate shelter and housing. It is recognised in many national constitutions, in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
Studying the current political and social situation, we may consider the topic of eviction from shelter.
Or the situation that brings thousands of people to leave their country and seek refuge in an outside country. The refugee crisis. Political asylum. Refugee camps.

Languages:
The native language, with respect to others. How we feel when we do not understand anything.
You can play with metaphors, when you escape from what you mean. Euphemisms in order to avoid confrontation. Politically correct language. Poetic forms.

Music:
The song that makes us feel good. Or the song we listen to, which acts as our own personal shelter whenever we are angry, or sad, or troubled. Or we may analyse songs that revolve around this topic.

“...My first successful work of art was when I was 11 years old, and it was a mask. One of the first pieces which I made to enter art school was also a mask ( Me as an artist 1984). Masks help us to explore the truth of the many I’s who live in us, in particular those who we hide in our everyday lives, as we can see in the anonymous profiles in social networks. Of course I’ve not exhausted this theme, and I hope I can keep sounding the depths of thought and human behaviour.”
